Blanking Process

Blanking is a common stamping process used to punch out parts of the required shape and size from metal sheets. In this process, the sheet is cut into a predetermined shape and size by a die, and the resulting part is called “blank”. The remaining part is cut off as waste.

Benefits of Blanking Process

  • High production efficiency: Blanking is a high-speed and efficient production method, especially suitable for mass production.
  • Good dimensional consistency: Blanking can ensure the consistency of part size due to the precision and repeatability of the mold.
  • High cost-effectiveness: For large-scale production, the cost-effectiveness of blanking is significant, and the mold cost can be amortized through mass production.
  • High material utilization: Through reasonable layout and mold design, material waste can be minimized.

Princinple of blanking process

The basic principle of blanking process is to use the relative movement between the punch and the lower die in the die to apply sufficient pressure to the metal sheet placed between them, so that it breaks and separates along the predetermined contour line, thereby obtaining parts of the required shape. This process usually occurs on a stamping machine, which provides sufficient pressure to drive the punch through the sheet.

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions on blanking process, if you have any other question not listed here, just feel free to contact us.

Blanking process is a specific type of stamping processes. Stamping process can be divided into several type process according to processing difference. Such as blanking, punching, bending and deep drawing.

Punching and blanking can be performed on a variety of metals, including but not limited to:

  • Titanium alloys
  • Low carbon steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Aluminum alloys
  • Brass
  • Copper

To prevent cracking during the punching and blanking process, consider the following measures:

Progressive Punching: For deeper or more complex shapes, use multiple steps or progressive dies to gradually form the part.

Material Selection: Choose materials with good formability.

Proper Lubrication: Use suitable lubricants to reduce friction.

Die Design: Ensure the die has adequate corner radii to reduce stress concentrations.

Punching and blanking are widely applied in various industries, including:

General Machinery Manufacturing: Shells, covers, and other components for various machinery.

Automotive Industry: Body panels, engine covers, door panels, etc.

Home Appliances Industry: Shells and internal components for refrigerators, washing machines, etc.

Aerospace Industry: Certain structural components and outer components for aircraft.

Packaging Industry: Metal cans, lids, etc., for food and beverages.
